Moon Base Idea Just Got Real

moon base

The above image is from one of my favorite childhood books, “Welcome to Moonbase” by Ben Bova. It was published in 1987 and imagined a ‘future history’ that had mankind returning to the moon in 1999 and establishing a permanent base there by 2020.  With the announcement today that NASA has discovered ‘significant’ amounts of water on the moon, we just moved one step closer to making this idea a reality.

A permanent base on the moon could be used for any number of reasons including:

  • Using native materials to make everything from rocket fuel to high-grade optics
  • Launching rockets less expensively than here on Earth (less gravity means less propulsion required)

But the best reason in my opinion? Space tourism, Baby!
